Botanic Health Spa
The restoration and repurposing of the Gasthuis Site Elisabeth in Antwerp has revitalized the historic buildings and gardens. Situated between the botanical garden and the city center, this complex now offers a harmonious blend of heritage and modern functionality. Led by AIDarchitecten, a careful balance between preservation and contemporary use has been achieved through meticulous restoration and the addition of new elements.
The project involved both the redesign of historical spaces, such as the chapel and infirmary, and new additions, including a light-filled conservatory that houses the spa. This spa, complete with treatment rooms, is constructed with plasterboard walls and ceilings tailored to the specific technical requirements of each room. The connecting corridor is distinguished by an elegant basket arch design, where the ceiling blends seamlessly into the walls. Wooden slats were used in the decor, giving the space a warm ambiance while also enhancing the acoustics
The restoration, which began in 2017, required close collaboration among architects, heritage specialists, and the city to ensure both the historical value and modern functionality of the site. The result is a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city, where heritage and contemporary use come together effortlessly.
